Stop privatising the probation service

Stop the Offender Management Bill
The Offender Management Bill will have its final stages in the House of Commons in February 2007. If passed, the Bill would allow the Home Secretary to privatise the Probation Service - meaning the supervision of offenders could be handed over to the private sector to run for profit.
The Probation Service has already suffered some privatisation. The management of property and hostel facilities such as cooking and cleaning were privatised three years ago and resulted in a 30% hike in prices and a dramatic fall in standards.
In the Prison Service, Prison Officers in private prisons are paid substantially less than their fellow workers in publicly-run prisons. The LRC believes that the criminal justice system should not be subject to the pursuit of profit.
Amendments to the Bill have been tabled by MPs Neil Gerrard and John McDonnell. Julie please NAPO, back the amendments by Gerrard and McDonnell and to oppose the privatisatio of the Probation Service.
The Bill is opposed by the National Association of Probation Officers (NAPO), Amicus and the Probation Boards Association (PBA), but has been welcomed by the CBI.
