From the Guardian backbencher
Dear Julie have you read the guardians backbencher - your friend Geoff Hoon in the hotseat! Why did he get to go and all the other folk mentioned below didn't?
'If it was a good day for Craig Murray, who was thanked for the useful information he gave the European parliament's investigation into extraordinary rendition, it was a very bad one for Geoff Hoon. The committee described his cooperation, or lack of it, as "deplorable".
But what could poor Geoff do when Margaret Beckett, citing a "busy agenda", had - in the words of the committee - "singled out Minister Hoon to deputise her"?
Des Browne, John Reid and Douglas Alexander were also invited, but declined, giving no reasons. Eliza Manningham-Buller and John Scarlet weren't authorised to go. Nor was Michael Wood, whose legal advice on the admissibility of intelligence obtained under torture "outraged"
the delegation. Geoff - it may feel as if they're all dumping on you.
But one day, quite soon, it'll all be over.'
