Rethink Draft Biofuels Policy
Good intentions lain to waste:-The Governments draft biofuels policy, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), could see businesses producing biofuels by destroying rainforests and wetlands.This dash for biofuels:Is poorly thought outLacks appropriate safeguardsCould create more problems than it solves Greenpeace, RSPB, WWF and Friends of the Earth are all demanding that the RTFO is strengthened so that it truely benefits the environment.Tell the Minister of State for Transport to choose the right biofuel.

All biofuels used in UK under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation should be subject to strict and compulsory rules introduced at the start of the scheme, with independent checks on the companies concerned. Without strong and compulsory standards, extensive biofuel development could lead to:- Increased destruction of forest lands and other valuable habitat;- End up producing more greenhouse gases than they save;- Threaten the food supply and livelihoods of some of the worlds most vulnerable people.

Please ask the minister responsible, to ensure that these things do not happen as a consequence of UK policy. Please ensure that biofuels used in UK are good for the climate, do not lead to habitat destruction and support the livelihoods of vulnerable people. Delaying strict and compulsory standards should not be an option.
